California Senate Bill (S.B.) 443 was introduced in February 2009 to the California Senate. According to it’s sponsor, California Senator Fran Pavely, “this bill would direct the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment to conduct a study to determine if chemical cleaning products used in grocery stores pose any hazard of food contamination in those settings, or of environmental health risk to consumers and workers.”
S.B. 443 was later suspended in Committee, but could be resurrected in the future, bringing a much-needed inquiry into the health and safety hazards posed by corrosive and hazardous chemicals currently used in cleaning California’s supermarkets.
